The IoT innovation space is is both a physical and virtual space equipped with IoT tools (e.g., low-cost sensors, gateways, RFID/NFC tools) to explore the development and design of AI methods and optimization techniques, as well as to demonstrate the benefits of these data-driven IoT techniques for decision-making.

The goal is for all relevant data to flow digitally throughout the product creation and use process. This allows for quick feedback loops from production to development, which improves future service concepts. The research group connected computing focuses on the implementation of intelligent services using various AI and optimization methods.

We offer consultancy in the following themes:

  1. Design Thinking Workshop by using OMiLAB
  2. IoT & Services Engineering in the edge-to-cloud continuum by using sensor networks.
  3. AI/Optimisation by developing various Services using AI and Optimisation

OMiLAB Node at JR: The OMiLAB@JOANNEUM RESEARCH Node supports the group in the area of Design Thinking. Design Thinking is an effective innovation approach that provides interpretation and visualisation options for the conception of product/service/business model approaches. For visualisation, Design Thinking recommends the use of appropriate tools for idea generation and early prototyping work. The tools are designed to be generic, intuitive and flexible to encourage creativity and co-creation in groups with different skills.

IoT Expertise: The realisation of RFID, NFC and IoT applications requires interdisciplinary knowledge within the project team. Our laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art RFID readers to realise your RFID/NFC application. We also have expertise in environmental sensing and communication protocols to help you successfully implement your Internet of Things project. In particular, we can help you choose the right strategy for your business and guide you through the step-by-step implementation of IoT projects, for example in asset management.

AI/Optimisation: We use data to research fair and unbiased algorithms and scoring methods that minimise the risk of discrimination, thereby building trust in artificial intelligence. We work closely with the user community to better understand the causal relationships between data and decision-making patterns. In this way, we develop fair algorithms and scoring methods that are the essential building blocks of trustworthy AI and provide you with the best possible support for your decisions. We are working on several research projects in this area

  • FAIRWork: Current automated and hierarchical structured production processes can only insufficiently deal with the upcoming flexibilization. We foster the “democratization” of decision-making in production processes, hence the participation of all involved stakeholders, by introducing a decentralized AI system.
  • IlluMINEation: The core objective of illuMINEation is to improve the efficiency as well as health & safety of European mining operation and their personnel. https://www.illumineation-h2020.eu/the-project
  • DeSSnet: A major challenge in the digital transformation of industry is the acquisition, time-aware analytics and managing of complex processes by means of highly advanced and dependable wireless sensing systems. It is the overall aim of the K-Project to enable the future usage of sensor networks as dependable and as cost-efficient as possible. https://www.joanneum.at/en/digital/reference-projects/dependable-secure-time-aware-sensor-networks-dessnet
